Dykstra & Partners Naval Architects was founded in 1969 by Gerard Dijkstra and was originally known as Ocean Sailing Development Holland BV. At the company’s inception, they were primarily involved with ocean racing and this remained so for the first ten years. However, the company soon turned its attention to yacht design, shorthanded racers, and ocean going sailboats capitalizing on Gerard Dijkstras experience as a skilled sailor. The Dykstra & Partners firm has also given a lot of attention to its research and development as well as the testing phase of new ship construction.
The shipbuilding firm of Holland Jachtbouw was established in 1990 and is located near Amsterdam, Holland. The original design and specifications of the Yankee J-Class were considered state of the art for the time. The original Yankee was 37.4 meters long. The original hull was built out of steel and bronze, while the deck and mast was made of wood. However, the new Yankee J-H3 will be truly state of the art starting out with an aluminum hull with a length of 39 meters. The deck will be constructed of both aluminum and teak wood. The mast will be built of a light weight but strong carbon material. This new J-Class will also have a much larger sail area than the original at 10,000 square feet.
The new Yankee J-Class J-H3 is to be built to both Lloyds A1 and MCA standards, which will allow the ship to be used for racing and chartering once it has been delivered. A 325 KW main engine will provide the propulsion for the Yankee, while both a 50 KW and a 32 KW generator will provide auxiliary power. The Yankee interior has been designed to accommodate a permanent crew of seven when racing and an additional twenty-one crewmembers with pipe cots when on a charter. The Yankee will be launched in early 2012 in order to participate in the J-Class regattas in the UK.
