In our country, which is surrounded by seas on three sides, yachting and sailing are very advanced, especially thanks to well-established institutions. The love of sailing, which started with Naval School School ships and then spread with sailing boats, causes us to get results that will make us smile in the international community with the support of sailing clubs established on our beaches. Turkish Offshore Racing Club (TAYK) is undoubtedly one of the pioneers of this development.
On 08 May 1971; Cent ARDAN, Samim ARDUMAN, Faruk BIRGEN, Fahir CELIKBAŞ, Izzettin CINTAV, Süleyman DİRVANA, Spiridon ETNOPULOS, Kerim KERİMOĞLU, Muhittin ÖNEY, Nedim ÖZGEN, Alberto PENHAS, İzzet PENSOY, Şakir SABUNCUOĞLU, who were the famous Turkish yachtsmen of the period who participated in the races, TUKSAVUL; Open Sea Racing Club (AYK) to organize yacht races according to international rules, to bring international measurement and handicap systems to Turkey, to invite foreign yachtsmen to races to be held in Turkey, and to promote Turkish yachting by participating in races abroad. they have established.
In the days it was founded, IOR, which was the most applied “measure and handicap system” in those days in the world. AYK, which started by training measurers in England and organizing the races in that class; Since there was no marina in Istanbul at that time, yachts had to spend the winter on land, only three races between June and September in a limited time frame; He organized Marmara Cup, Triangle Route race and Turkish Naval Foundation Cup races.
As the first international organization, it took one leg of the La Trans Mediterranée race to Kuşadası in 1980 and organized the Kuşadası-Pire stage from there. organized the “Friendship Cups-Friendships Cup” race with their support and pioneered the winds of friendship blowing in the Aegean Sea.
