The history of the DVV began in March 1950, when a group of sailing enthusiasts created a partnership called Diporto Velico Veneziano with the aim of promoting pleasure sailing and organizing cruises and sailing regattas. The first settlement, on a precarious municipal concession, takes place in Sant’Elena, in a portion of a shed already in use at the Celli shipyard and on an adjacent sandbank of 6,250 square meters. The impressive work of excavating the salt marsh then gave life to a dock which has gradually been populated with dinghies, small cruises, snipes and dinghies.
1953 marks the beginning of the water settlement; in fact, the state water concession dates from that year, as well as the further municipal concession for a warehouse under the stadium grandstand. In the same year, with considerable sacrifices, the first 25-metre-long walkway was built. The walkway is very narrow but the boats are already numerous and the sporting spirit prevails over the lack of structures.
1962 marks the beginning of a further enlargement of the moorings with the installation of catenaries and buoys, new water concessions are obtained, the wooden poles of the walkways are replaced with other concrete poles: the result is a marina with 150 more comfortable moorings of the upper Adriatic.
In the meantime, work began on the first shipbuilding equipment for the members’ dinghy boats, without neglecting the sporting and competitive activity.
In 1968 the construction of the new storage shed began, meanwhile new gangways were placed in 1969 and the “Sailing School” was set up in collaboration with the Venice Isola degli Studi Foundation.
Everything is going swimmingly and it is due to the passionate activity of the Executive Councils that follow one another and to the collaboration of the members, when a terrible event hits the island of Sant’Elena in September 1970: a devastating tornado which reduces rubble the structures of the DVV built with so much effort.
1971-1972-1973-1974 are years of intense work to rebuild what natural events had destroyed. The meetings of the directors follow each other with enthusiasm. The headquarters are rebuilt with larger dimensions than the previous one, the walls of the shed and the fence are rebuilt, the shed is covered, a pier is built for docking and it is equipped with a small crane.
Since its inception, the “Porticciolo E. De Zottis”, which covers the southern part of the large trapezoidal dock of Sant’Elena with its structures, despite its favorable location that allows you to reach the sea in a short time, however, has the great handicap of a double entrance. This state of affairs, understandable in the first years of his life, deprived the marina of independence as well as security. Hence the need to have an exclusive entrance.
Projects to achieve this objective have followed one another and since 1999 the process of renewal and rearrangement has begun which will allow the DVV to be given a structure in 2000 that will hopefully be definitive both in the water and in the land area. Thanks to the necessary permits, finally obtained, the goal of closing the dock was reached, which took place with mobile platforms between the North 2 walkway and the Diga walkway. As part of this radical reorganisation, the projects for resurfacing and new toilets have already been completed.
