What do you do when you sign up online for a regatta and the empty space for “Yacht Club:” is a required field. Well, you make make one up.
What happens when (thanks to Google) a journalist cold calls and wants an interview to discuss the “said” club’s details and history. GULP… you make one up and hope it doesn’t go to print or you sound official enough to balderdash the interviewee.
This is how Deadman’s Flat Yacht Club became official and how it grew.
The idea began as a grassroots following, turned club. It was founded on one simple principle; race boats are meant to travel to regattas and races throughout the US.
With a member concentration on racing, Deadman’s Flat Yacht Club is always looking for new members who enjoy racing, drinking and various regattas across North America. Most members have affiliations with other yacht clubs, but some use DFYC as their sole club. DFYC’s traveling yacht club mentality is perfect, get your boat to a regatta and sail fast.
Even though Deadman’s Flat doesn’t have a specific sailing location it began in a family room in central Ohio after a difficult corporate transfer to land locked suburbia. Now at any given time you’ll find members out racing on lakes in Colorado, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Maryland, Florida, Texas, and even some ocean racing.
It’s 23 boats and 50+ members (BYC is well represented with over 10 members) have been collecting flags at many regattas and races. In 2010, DFYC was 1st in class in Detroit, Annapolis and Larchmont NOODs (Overall Boat of the Week), Mills Throphy Race, IRC Championships, Bayview to Mackinac Race, Hog Wild Regatta along with other members placing in the Top 3. DFYC also had collection of seconds and thirds at Block Island Race Week and Key West Race Week.
When they’re not out sailing, the avid racers can be found holding “skipper’s meetings” at watering holes across the U.S. Keep a look out for a DFYC burgee on a transom, odds are good you will find a cold drink and good story when you meet the crew.
DFYC is always looking for members and the price is right. Membership requirements are simple – buy a burgee, fill out an application and buy a cocktail the next time you see another member.
