The Clube Naval de Sesimbra was founded on September 4, 1930, by fishing and water sports enthusiasts, who, from the very beginning, understood, and well, that the village of Sesimbra was an excellent seaside resort, endowed with unique characteristics in terms of world, which should have a center for sport fishing and nautical sports that would boost tourism in the village. At the time, it was an innovative vision of the future, given the means and mentalities, but that is how the Clube Naval was born, through the initiative of prestigious figures from Sesimbra, led by the Mayor, Captain-Engineer Joaquim Mateus Preto Chagas.
During its already long life, the Clube Naval had great moments of collective experience, as reported in the book, “Breve História do Clube Naval de Sesimbra”, by António Reis Marques. Since participating in the Tarde Náutica Infante D. Henrique, in September 1940; going through the Sesimbra Fishermen’s Festivities in subsequent years; swimming, with the 1st Crossing of the Bay in 1946; the launch of the school raft in 1952; Clube Naval was an association focused on the sea with the spirit on land and the great driving force and the locomotive potential of the nautical activities of the time, always with great participation and involvement of the fishing community and in favor of the town of Sesimbra.
It was this spirit of promoting nautical activities and witness that passed through the various governing bodies of the Clube Naval, who, with work and dedication, did their best over these 75 years and achieved good results in the activities carried out at the time, namely swimming and hunting submarine, where CNS athletes stood out at national and international level.
But the difficulty of accessing the sea, associated with the precariousness of the nautical support facilities, imposed unacceptable limits on the continuity and development of CNS activities. Despite these difficulties, the Club maintained operations and support for its members with anchorage and crane activities, expanding the scope of its nautical activities to sailing and sport fishing. An important note for the organization of the European Spearfishing Championship in 1980, which was an honorable success for the sport, for the Club and for our country.
From the mid-1990s until the present day, namely with the installation of the Porto de Recreio in 1999, the Clube Naval gained more importance in the port context, as an economic unit and driver of tourist expansion and the most diversified nautical activities, with relevant success at the protocol level with the City Council and municipal schools. The number of associates abruptly increases, it gains dimension, the number of practitioners in the sports sections grows, namely in the new canoeing section, and the project of the new headquarters appears, which today is a reality.
In 2004, Clube Naval de Sesimbra invested heavily in holding the 40th Deep Sea Fishing World Championship, to repeat the success achieved by Sesimbra in other prestigious maritime events, due to its fishing qualities and blue sea, and as a factor promoting and boosting quality tourism linked to the sea and fishing. It never hurts to remember that the sea and fishing continue to be the soul of the town of Sesimbra, framed by the beauty of Arrábida, the grandeur of Cape Espichel, which is associated with the memory of swordfish and tourism in “fishy Sesimbra”, as LuÃs de Camões named it in the “LusÃadas”, it provides inexhaustible stories of big fish and valiant and brave fishermen.
Today, with its 88 years of history and the work carried out in plain sight, the CNS reaches a remarkable level of development, being equipped with the adequate and necessary infrastructures to be considered a nautical club of European class and a pole of social development. and sports for the town of Sesimbra.
