The foundation of the Clube Naval de Ponta Delgada was not confined to the year of approval of its statutes, but extended to a vast associative movement that marked, in the Azores, the end of the 19th century, where due to the orange export trade, established, at that time, contacts with foreign lands that strongly influenced men with a new and entrepreneurial spirit, who came to revolutionize the Island of S. Miguel, in the most diverse sectors, constituting the so-called “great generation”.
On the other hand, it is no stranger to the fact that the liberal movement created an extraordinary socio-cultural animation on this island, which resulted in a true commitment to all the problems linked to culture in its many forms, as well as to instruction and education, with special relevance for everything related to the beginnings of the movements “of the free administration of the Azores by the Azoreans”.
Another important reason was the fact that Ponta Delgada is a city facing the sea, with an ever-increasing movement of boats in its bay, which also excited many people, particularly young people, to practice water sports.
