The Lagos Sailing Club was founded on April 20, 1950, with the publication of the statutes in the Government Gazette on April 25 of that year.
Since then, it has been the only nautical sports club in the City, never having interrupted its activity.
It has fulfilled local requirements and requests for the use of Baía de Lagos, which is considered the best national sailing track and one of the best in Europe.
Initially the main activities were sailing and sport fishing and later they diversified and others emerged such as swimming, diving, spearfishing, canoeing, sailing board, triathlon, big game fishing and Jet-Ski corresponding to new requests. To this end, it organized sailing regattas, sea fishing competitions, national and international championships and other competitions, with more than two hundred participants participating in each of these sporting activities. The Sailing Club of Lagos has collaborated regularly in the organization of the National Beach Handball Championship, in the competitions that take place in Lagos.
Since 1950, CVL’s headquarters and part of its facilities have been located next to Praia da Solaria in a building provided by the Municipality of Lagos, which has always supported this Club in recognizing its importance, both in terms of sports, social, cultural and tourism and in a building built by CVL in 1990, on land in the maritime public domain. In 1991 CVL installed a small floating pontoon at the Fishing Dock at the Port of Lagos for mooring small boats owned by CVL members.
In 2003 this pontoon was expanded and greatly improved. For the occupation of the riverbed and area at Cais da Solaria, the CVL pays the IPTM annually. In 2005, a new support building was built at Cais da Solaria with new changing rooms, a training room and a small shop.
It has also always received support from other official bodies, both from departments of the Ministry of Education in providing rooms in schools to accommodate athletes and for prize distribution parties, as well as the Ministry of Defense in providing tents and loaning facilities, as well as the Ministry of the Navy in support of regattas.
The Algarve Tourism Board, the Civil Government of Faro and the Coordination Commission for the Algarve Region have provided financial support.
The Institute for Ports and Maritime Transport, as well as the bodies that preceded it, have also contributed to the development of CVL by providing areas that have been allowing the construction of essential infrastructure.
It is also worth noting the support provided at the local level, namely by the Lagos Marina, the Lagos Volunteer Firefighters, the Lagos Nucleus of the Portuguese Red Cross, local merchants, etc.
The Clube de Vela de Lagos was recognized as a Legal Person of Public Sports Utility on October 23, 1990, for everything it has done for the sports development of the City and the Country.
