Vilanova i la Geltrú has a very important part of its identity in the sea. In this sense, it is difficult to define the character of its inhabitants, the peculiarities of their customs, their festivals, their dreams, without taking into account their Mediterranean vocation. This is so for various reasons, from which their own economic and commercial activity throughout history cannot be separated.
The Club Nàutic Vilanova was born from a long idyll with the beach that dates back to the 1920s. The first boats that colonized the Vilanova coast were rowing canoes and sailboats, all built by a small group of fans with more enthusiasm than material and economic means.
It was they, headed by Josep Solà Morell, who started in 1940, after the Civil War, what had been a long-standing desire: to have a suitable place to store and repair the boats, as well as having facilities to encourage leisure and share affection. In this way, in 1942, they took advantage of the premises located in the wet lowlands of the beach to found what would end up being La Sección Náutica de Educación y Descanso under the aegis of the Trade Union.
Without any official help and only the financial contributions of its members (2 pesetas per month), the nautical section survived on the basis of voluntarism the fifteen years that passed until the completion of the port works started in 1949. The first
installation of the current Nautical Club was a wooden house donated by the shipping company Argimbau and located in the outer Llevant dock of the port. In that endearing shelter, which survived all the shellinguntil the final transfer of the facilities, the official inauguration of the Vilanova Nautical Club took place in 1957, as evidenced by the photographs lent by Jordi Mas and currently exhibited in the Club’s Social Hall. The founders of Club Nàutic Vilanova were 50 people, almost all linked to the previous nautical section, and among them its first president, Josep Solà i Morell, and his successor in office, José María Hernández El Cap i . At that time the club had sixteen 4.5m long Snipe class boats built with pine planks and canvas sails.
In June 1960, according to records, the total number of members was 150 and there were 31 registered boats. A few months later, the Grupo de Puertos authorizes the provisional transfer of the club to the SE corner. of the fishing wharf, and after some time the first levers donated by the Barcelona Nautical Club and transported by sea towed by a keel would arrive. The definitive transfer to the current situation, a project started in 1973, was not a reality until 1989, and at the moment, with more than 850 moorings and 700 members, the CNV is the second yachting club in Catalonia.
