Club Maritimo de Mahon

With a look back, the book “120 years of history” Liga Marítima / Club Marítimo de Mahón 1900 – 2020 begins; whose author, Yolanda Llinás, makes a retrospective that, beyond setting a starting date or time point, reminds us and tells us what were the origins, and underlying motivations, of the nautical activity in Mahón; that forever mark the long history of our club, a history that, like all of them, is written with the evolutions and transformations that we experience over time and with changes in the context.

An exhaustive investigation carried out by D. Javier Hernández, manager of the Club between 1981 and 1988, has allowed us to find, with rigorous documentary support, that the Club Marítimo de Mahón was not born precisely in 1945, with its constitution under the control of the Spanish Federation of Nautical Clubs, if not the result of an evolution of “Sa Lliga”, provincial board of the National Maritime League, official entity that dealt with issues related to the sea, both the Navy and the Merchant Navy; and which was established in 1900.

Legislative changes and associative interests preceded the initiative and decision of the members of “Sa Lliga”, at the General Meeting in 1944, to found itself as a yacht club in order to keep the organization’s activity alive. And that is how on March 11, 1945, the Club Marítimo de Mahón was officially recognized, with a hundred members, chaired by Juan Florit Fernández and with Amado Clar, as sailing member.

The constant throughout these 120 years that have elapsed since the founding of the Maritime League, and with it of the Provincial Board of Mahón “Sa Lliga” – base of the Mahón Maritime Club – has been the love and enjoyment of the sea , which have become an important social work, of great integrating value; as in a prolific sporting activity, with an enviable track record; and that have turned the Marítimo into a benchmark for the Mahon and Menorcan society.

And we could continue narrating and detailing episodes of our journey over the years, but to be faithful to the order and narrative line of our book ” 120 years of history” Liga Marítima / Club Marítimo de Mahón 1900 – 2020 , we leave you, until its publication and official presentation, the first chapter: “Recovering the origins”, as a perfect appetizer and tribute to some origins that we have documented for posterity.
