The earliest records of land yachting on Brean sands appear round 1920, when locals sailed for fun, having made yachts from the remains of World War 1 aircraft. 70 years later the Brean Land Yachting Club is still going from strength to strength. Since then Brean has produced many fine ‘pilots’. Yes, that’s what people who sail land yachts are called. It’s not a surprising term really, as these wind driven chariots can get up to dizzying speeds. 60mph is not unknown!
