Bay Sailors, a Sailing Club for Singles. Bay Sailors is the brainchild of Bill Butler.
Bill loved to sail and actively participated in the Chesapeake Bay club, Singles on Sailboats, while he worked in the Pentagon as an aide to General Schwarzkopf. While in the Washington area, Bill built his own 30′ sailboat…and sailed the bay.
Before long General Schwarzkopf took charge of Central Command (Cencom) so Bill sailed his boat to Florida and began working at Mc Dill AFB. Bill wanted to share his love of sailing and was single. What better way to meet new people than to start a club? So, in answer to the tiny ad, a half dozen multi- talented men and women met in a closet sized room in Tampa one evening. Bay Sailors was born and Bill served as the first Commodore June 1993 – January 1996.
Through the club, Bill met and married the love of his life, Elaine (Baker). When Bill retired, he and Elaine sailed the little boat all up and down the East Coast and into the Bahamas until Bill’s health issues amended their cruising plans. Many miles passed under their keel. Years passed and Elaine Butler, Bill’s widow, was asked to rejoin Bay Sailors where she has served as Cruising Coordinator.
Now Bay Sailors is a large, strong, vital organization that focuses on friendship, education, sailing and fun. It is entirely run by enthusiastic members who volunteer their skills, time and even their sailboats so that others can share their passion. Bill’s legacy is the hundreds of members, past and present, that found new friends, new interests and new passions thru Bay Sailors.
