Barrie Yacht Club

The mission of the Barrie Yacht Club (BYC) is to provide a safe, family-friendly environment that encourages the sport of sailing through skills development, education, competition and fellowship.

The Barrie Yacht Club was established in 1952 as a “Not for Profit Social Club” by a group of local Barrie sailors who wanted to create a venue where like-minded people could get together to enjoy the sport of sailing. Their goals were to encourage sailboat building, sailing among amateurs, racing, water safety and fellowship. The club’s early history is documented in the History of the Barrie Yacht Club – The First Twenty Years authored by Daphne Stock (2017).

Other than boat building the goals of the Club have remained the same over the years. Through the efforts of our members, the harbour, property, and clubhouse have undergone many improvements over time. The BYC has evolved from a basic sailing spot to a modern yacht club in the heart of a growing and prosperous City.

The Club is home to 200 members, including Olympic medalists and hopefuls, and outstanding boaters of all types and all ages. The Club offers seasonal activities for its membership. We are recognized as a leader in sailing education, with the largest sailing school on Lake Simcoe.

Members and crew enjoy a weekly racing series, club regattas and other interclub regattas through our partnership with the Lake Simcoe Interclub Series (LSIS). Through our membership in our governing bodies Ontario Sailing and Sail Canada, members enjoy reciprocal privileges around the world. The BYC also welcomes visiting sailors through our reciprocal agreement.
