Balatonfüredi Yacht Club

Based on the English experience, a group of Hungarian gentlemen founded the first sailing club in Hungary on March 16, 1867 under the name Balaton-Füredi Yacht Association .

Count Ödön Batthyány, who sailed in England and won competitions, became the president of the club.

The establishment of the association was also reported by “Bell’s Life” and “Hunts Yachting Magazine” in England.

The expansion of the domestic sailing sport was helped by the fact that an English shipbuilder, Richard Young, started building the first sailing ships in 1881, in his workshop built on the square next to our current clubhouse. In 1882, the first domestic sailing competition was held.

On September 14, 1884, the Stefánia Yacht Society was founded under the commodoreship of Prince Mihály Esterházy. The association included 25 large yachts, 30 boats and 3 motor ships. Its club house, which was built based on the plans of Alajos Hausszmann, was today’s Vitorlás restaurant. Sailing club life and the organization of competitions became regular.
