In recent years, the conversation surrounding environmental sustainability in the realm of luxury yachting has evolved from a mere whisper to a resounding call for substantial transformation. While numerous yacht designers, luxury shipbuilders, and maritime experts have taken steps, both modest and monumental, to address these concerns, it can be a daunting task to discern genuine commitment from superficial “greenwashing” marketing tactics.

Within this landscape, luxury catamarans and sailing yachts have emerged as pioneers of eco-friendly yachting, characterized by reduced fuel consumption and a gentler approach to traversing the seas. These principles have long been the cornerstones of this sector’s ethos. The emergence of environmentally conscious yacht models, such as the Eco Sunreef Yachts, underscores a notable commitment by certain brands to champion the cause of more sustainable yachting.

Building on the success of groundbreaking eco-conscious models like the Sunreef 82 Double Deck, Sunreef Yachts has continued to lead the charge in sustainable yachting. Their latest addition, the 15.2-metre Sunreef Eco 50, stands as a testament to their unwavering commitment to environmental responsibility.

The inception of the Sunreef Eco yacht line in 2019 marked a significant milestone, met with enthusiasm not only by yacht enthusiasts but also by the broader industry. Remarkably, even before the construction of the inaugural Sunreef 50 commenced at the shipbuilder’s Gdansk yard, seven units from this innovative eco catamaran series had already found eager buyers. Evidently, Sunreef Yachts is not content to merely ride the wave of change; they aim to master it, steering the course towards a more environmentally responsible future in luxury yachting.

In mid-2019, the inaugural hull of the Sunreef Eco range, the 15.2-metre Tiril yacht, was proudly handed over to its owner. This momentous delivery marked a significant milestone for Sunreef Yachts. The client, a valued repeat customer, was initially invited to the Cannes Yachting Festival by Francis Lapp, the CEO of Sunreef Yachts, in response to the unfortunate loss of their Sunreef 62 yacht, Catsy, during the aftermath of Hurricane Irma in the Americas.

Fueled by a passionate interest in eco-technology, the owner’s initial intention to commission a new 50′ catamaran swiftly evolved into a profound enthusiasm for the development of Sunreef’s new eco-conscious yacht range. This shift in focus exemplifies a shared commitment to advancing sustainable yachting practices.

Innovative technology developed by the shipyard’s R&D office allows for the integration of 67m² of solar panels across the mast, boom, hulls, superstructure, and bimini. Paired with twin electric engines, the Sunreef 50 Eco not only provides efficient sailing but also generates clean energy through its propellers’ rotation. This energy is stored in specially designed ultralight battery banks, a hallmark of the Eco range. Additionally, the yacht features a revolutionary air conditioning system that significantly reduces energy consumption.
