Kadey-Krogen Yachts announces the introduction of the Krogen 48′ AE to its fleet of Pure Full Displacement Trawler Yachts, once again setting a new standard for capability and liveability in the trawler market. In deciding what to name the successor to the venerable Krogen 48′ North Sea, the company chose the AE designation as an abbreviation for Advanced Ergonomics, the underlying theme in this new offering.
“Owner feedback has been essential to the development of the Krogen 48′ AE,” says Larry Polster, Vice President of Kadey-Krogen Yachts. “Our owners are the ones out there living the lifestyle so we trust the feedback they provide will make our boats even better for the next generation of Krogen owners. As an example, the expanded galley with the four burner Viking range seen in the last few Krogen 48′ North Seas was born from owner feedback and one of those boats won the People’s Choice award at Trawler Fest this past summer.”
The Krogen 48′ AE features a fully covered aft deck or “back porch” as the owners like to call this multi-purpose space. Moving forward through the welded aluminum weather tight doors, one immediately begins to notice the Advanced Ergonomic nature of the design. To starboard there is either an “L” shaped or “U” shaped settee along with a table that both expands, raises and lowers so it can perform the dual functions of coffee table or a dining table for eight. To port there is room for two full-sized chairs as well as a clear pathway to the galley and beyond.
Forward and to starboard the large Krogen 48′ AE galley features a four burner Viking® range, household size refrigerator/freezer, convection microwave and room for both a trash compactor and dishwasher. In addition to the abundance of storage in the galley, there is a nearly floor-to-ceiling pantry opposite on the port side.
Moving up to the pilothouse, the Advanced Ergonomics concept really begins to take hold; here owners will find steps. Real, wide and deep steps like in a house with a rock solid banister for safety. The pilothouse on the Krogen 48′ AE has been completely redesigned to accommodate side-by-side helm chairs as well as a larger electronics console.
The ergonomic theme continues through the pilothouse portside welded aluminum weather tight door to the boat deck and flybridge via molded steps, again with a handrail for safety. The boat deck is large enough to accommodate both a 13-foot tender as well as a summer kitchen. On the flybridge, the helm (with enough room for two helm chairs) is off to starboard with an L-shaped settee to port that extends the entertainment space of the boat and makes cruising on the flybridge more comfortable for guests.
Owners will have a choice of two or three cabin arrangements with the master being forward to maximize natural light and ventilation. The starboard cabin on both arrangements has a dedicated desk allowing this cabin to double as an office. Two heads are standard, each with a separate stall shower.
The hull is built using vinyl ester and isophthalic resins, knytex mats, and US-made Cook UV-protected gel coat. Critical areas of the hull are reinforced with a special impact-resistant fiberglass mat containing Twaron, the same fiber used to give body armor its “bullet-proof” capability. Twaron is an aramid fiber that is five times stronger than steel and up to 60% lighter than ballistic steel. This strong yet light fiber helps maintain a moderate displacement-to-length ratio that is a signature of Kadey-Krogen engineering and results in better fuel economy.
The Krogen 48’ AE will debut at Trawler Fest in Fort Lauderdale January 27-29 and can also be seen at the Miami International Boat Show at Sea Isle Marina February 17-21.
